Overview
Kilwa Kisiwani is a small island off Tanzania's southern coast containing the most significant collection of Swahili ruins on the East African coast, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. At its medieval peak from the 10th to 16th centuries, Kilwa was one of the wealthiest trading cities in the Indian Ocean world, controlling the gold trade from Great Zimbabwe. The ruins of the Great Mosque, Husuni Kubwa palace, and Gereza Fort bear witness to an extraordinary lost civilization.
