Overview
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area encompasses the Ngorongoro Crater — the world's largest intact and unflooded volcanic caldera, stretching 19 km across and sheltering roughly 25,000 large animals including an extraordinary density of lions, elephants, black rhino, and buffalo. Beyond the crater, the Conservation Area also protects Olduvai Gorge (one of the most important paleoanthropological sites on Earth) and the surrounding Crater Highlands. Maasai communities live alongside wildlife in a unique co-existence model.
