Ukerewe Island is the largest island in Lake Victoria, a lush hilly landmass located off the southern shore of the lake near Mwanza. The island supports around 400,000 people maintaining traditional fishing and agriculture, while unique wildlife includes the grey crowned crane, African fish eagle, and the endangered Ukerewe giant lizard.
