Overview
Iringa is a highland city in south-central Tanzania, elevated at 1,635 metres on the edge of the Iringa escarpment with views across the Great Ruaha River valley far below. The town serves as the main access point for the spectacular Ruaha National Park and the nearby Isimila Stone Age Site, where hand axes and fossil bones dating back 60,000 years have been found eroded out of ancient lake sediments. Iringa's cool climate, vibrant produce market, and legacy as a centre of Hehe resistance to German colonialism give it a distinctive character.
