Overview
The Shira Plateau is a vast, high-altitude moorland plateau on the western flank of Mount Kilimanjaro, sitting at around 3,800 metres. It forms the remnant caldera of the oldest of Kilimanjaro's three volcanic cones and serves as a critical acclimatization zone for climbers using the Lemosho and Shira routes. The plateau's otherworldly landscape of giant heathers, lobelias, and sweeping grasslands offers dramatic views of Kibo's glaciated summit rising above.
