Overview
Mount Rungwe is a dormant stratovolcano rising to 2,960 metres in southern Tanzania's Njombe Region, the third-highest peak in the country. Its slopes are blanketed in dense montane forest that forms part of the Eastern African Rift forests, sheltering elephants, leopards, and over 160 bird species. The mountain is sacred to the Nyakyusa people and can be hiked via trails offering views across the highland tea estates and, on clear days, as far as Lake Malawi.
