About Tingatinga Arts Centre

The Tingatinga Arts Centre in Dar es Salaam is the creative heart of Tanzania's most internationally recognized art form — the bold, colourful Tingatinga painting style originating with artist Edward Saidi Tingatinga in the late 1960s. The cooperative gallery in the Oyster Bay neighbourhood is home to dozens of Tingatinga artists who paint and sell their work directly to visitors, making it the most authentic place in the world to acquire original Tingatinga paintings. The genre's distinctive figures of animals, village scenes, and fantasy creatures in enamel paint on board have spread globally but remain most vibrant here.
