Overview
The Kaole Ruins lie just south of Bagamoyo and represent one of the earliest-known Swahili settlements in East Africa, dating back to the 13th century. The site includes two mosques — one of the oldest in Tanzania — and 30 tombs featuring the characteristic pillar design of Swahili funerary architecture. Kaole was a prosperous trading settlement connecting the East African interior with the Indian Ocean world before being abandoned around the 18th century.
