Overview
The Old Fort, also known as Ngome Kongwe, is the oldest standing building in Stone Town, Zanzibar, constructed by the Omani Arabs between 1698 and 1701 over the ruins of a Portuguese chapel. Its massive coral-rag walls and battlements once defended the town from Portuguese counter-attacks, and the structure later served as a prison, railway terminal, and tennis club before restoration as a cultural centre. Today the fort hosts an open-air amphitheatre, craft stalls, and cultural performances.
