Overview
The Tongoni Ruins near Tanga on Tanzania's northern coast contain the largest collection of pre-Swahili pillar tombs on the East African coast, dating from the 14th and 15th centuries. The site features around 40 coral-built tombs and the remains of a mosque, representing a once-thriving coastal settlement that participated in the medieval Indian Ocean trade network.
