Overview
The Kilwa Kisiwani Ruins form part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site and represent the most extensive collection of Swahili ruins in East Africa. The complex includes the Great Mosque — the largest ancient mosque in sub-Saharan Africa with sections dating to the 10th century — along with the Husuni Kubwa trading palace and Husuni Ndogo fort. Kilwa reached its zenith between the 13th and 15th centuries as the premier port controlling the East African gold trade.
