Overview
The Kondoa Rock Art Sites in central Tanzania contain thousands of prehistoric rock paintings spread across more than 150 sites on the escarpment facing the Rift Valley, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006. Created by ancestral San hunter-gatherer peoples over a period spanning from 2,000 to at least 19,000 years ago, the paintings depict animals, human figures, and spiritual imagery of exceptional artistic quality. The Maasai and farming communities of Kondoa still regard several sites as sacred places for prayer.
