About Mtoni Palace Ruins

The Mtoni Palace Ruins on the northern outskirts of Stone Town are the remains of the first royal palace built on Zanzibar by Sultan Said bin Sultan in the 1840s, once home to the sultan's household of hundreds. The ruins are evocatively described in Emily Ruete's celebrated memoir Memoirs of an Arabian Princess, written by a sultan's daughter who escaped to Europe. The crumbling walls and baobab-studded grounds make for an atmospheric late-afternoon visit.
