Overview
Olduvai Gorge in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is one of the most important paleoanthropological sites on Earth. The gorge has yielded fossils of some of our earliest ancestors — including Homo habilis, Australopithecus boisei and early Homo sapiens — dating back over 1.8 million years. A small museum near the gorge rim provides context, and active excavation sites can be viewed with a guide. The gorge is usually visited as part of a Ngorongoro itinerary.
