Overview
The Amboni Caves near Tanga on Tanzania's northern coast are the most extensive limestone cave system in East Africa, with documented passages extending over 10 kilometres. The caves have been carved by an underground river over millions of years and contain spectacular stalactites, stalagmites, and subterranean pools, as well as resident colonies of bats and cave-dwelling fish. The site holds deep spiritual significance for the local Digo people, who have used the caves for ancestral ceremonies for generations.
