Overview
The Songo Mnara Ruins on a small island near Kilwa form part of the Kilwa UNESCO World Heritage Site and represent one of the best-preserved examples of a medieval Swahili town in East Africa. Dating primarily from the 14th and 15th centuries, the ruins include a mosque, several mansions, and domestic structures revealing how an Indian Ocean merchant class lived. The remote island setting adds to the sense of encountering a genuinely lost world.
