Overview
Stiegler's Gorge is a dramatic canyon carved by the Rufiji River through the Selous ecosystem — now Nyerere National Park — where towering red cliffs rise 100 metres above the swift-flowing water below. Named after a Swiss explorer killed here by an elephant in 1907, the gorge is one of Tanzania's most spectacular natural formations and offers thrilling boat safaris where hippos, crocodiles, and African fish eagles are encountered amid breathtaking scenery. The gorge is also the site of Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project, Tanzania's largest dam.
