Overview
Zanzibar's Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage-listed historic city that served for centuries as the commercial and cultural heart of the Zanzibar Sultanate, a cosmopolitan meeting point of African, Arab, Indian, and European influences. The labyrinthine old city is dense with intricately carved wooden doors, multistorey coral-rag mansions, bazaars fragrant with spices, and mosques whose calls to prayer echo through narrow alleyways. Stone Town was the birthplace of Freddie Mercury and the last staging post for David Livingstone before his final expedition into the African interior.
