Mount Meru (4,566 m) is Africa's fifth-highest peak and an outstanding trekking destination in its own right, often used as an acclimatisation climb before Kilimanjaro. The four-day ascent through Arusha National Park passes through forest inhabited by colobus monkeys, buffalo and elephant before reaching the spectacular volcanic crater rim.
